Fund for Indigenous Peoples Human Rights Defenders at Risk


TheAsia Indigenous Peoples Pact is pleased to announce the establishment of the “Fund for Indigenous Peoples Human Rights Defenders at Risk” . With funding support from the European Commission, the fund was set up to:
1. Respond to immediate and urgent needs of Indigenous Human Rights Defenders and/or their families to alleviate their suffering and/or mitigate the consequences of the violations of their rights.
2. To provide sanctuary to IPHRDs who are facing serious threats to their personal security and wellbeing as a consequence of their human rights work.
This Fund shall compliment other actions to be undertaken to generate various forms of support in the over-all promotion and protection of human rights of indigenous peoples, which may include lobby and advocacy, capacity-building and networking.

URGENT ALERT: Mining bares more teeth by hiring renegade paramilitaries to force resisting communities to issue their consent in Bukidnon, Philippines

 

On October 28, 2011, members of the paramilitary group Triom Force intercepted Jimmy Liguyon, the barangay (village) captain of Dau, San Fernando, Bukidnon, and his wife as they were heading home from a human rights rally in Cagayan de Oro City.  According to Liguyon, the motorcycle they were riding was stopped and he and his wife were made to walk to a (vacant) house, accompanied by 13 armed men.  Their leader, whom he identified as Ange Dal-anay also known as ‘Taruc’, then threatened them.  Dal-anay told him to stop joining rallies and stop reporting the Triom Force’s activities on the radio.

Philippines: Torture of Yakan tribal member Abdul-Khan balingtin Ajib - Urgent Action!!

Task Force Detainees of the Philippines (TFDP) and Mindanao People’s Caucus (MPC) write to inform you about the arrest and alleged torture committed to a native of the Yakan tribe in Barangay Libug, Sumisip, Basilan Province, island of Mindanao. He was arrested on July 23, 2011 at about 5:30 in the morning. The alleged perpetrators were members of Special Operation Task Force Basilan (SOTF-B) belonging to 39th Scout Rangers under the command of Colonel Alexander Macario.

Bangladesh: Statement by BIHR - Gravely Concerned about the Massive Communal Attack on Jumma Villages by Bengali Settlers 

On 17 February 2011, following a death, the Bengali settlers from Gulshakhali settler area of Gulshakhali union under Longadu upazila in Rangamati district in collaboration with Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) (formerly BDR) made a massive communal attack on Jumma villages of Gulshakhali and Rangi Para areas. It is learnt that at least 23 houses of Jumma villagers including one BRAC school were reportedly burnt to ashes in the attack while two Jumma students were seriously injured in another attack made at Tintilya launchghat in Longadu at noon. see full text link

Motibagh gang rape is not the first incident and perhaps will not be the last either. The gruesome was the incident - 30 years old BPO employee from Mizoram kidnapped by four men at gun point and gang raped in a moving goods carrier vehicle at midnight on November 23, 2010 at Motibagh, South Delhi, when she and her friend was dropped by company cab 100 yards away from her rented home. read more link
